A technique to shape the frame
Motivated practical light
Make the illumination feel connected to a visible lamp or another plausible source within the scene.

How it works
Choose a source the viewer can understand, such as a table lamp. Shape the subject's illumination so its direction, color, and falloff feel compatible with that source. An off-camera fixture can support the practical without introducing a contradictory shadow.
The visible lamp does not have to provide all the exposure. It provides a reason for the lighting arrangement.
When to use it
Evening interior: let a table lamp explain the warm light on a seated character.
Desk scene: connect the brightest action to an on-screen work light while maintaining gentle room ambience.
Common mistakes
A visible lamp on one side with a dominant shadow pointing the wrong way weakens the illusion. A glowing shade can clip before the face is bright enough. Control practical brightness separately from supporting light.
